Have you ever walked into a large television retailer and experienced a wall of televisions?
In most cases, the televisions are all on the same TV channel which means all the pictures are coming from the same television feed. Yet, strangely, the picture quality and color balance vary widely from set to set. These variations even apply to sets that are the same make and model. Why is this? And more importantly, how can you tell which picture is the right one?

Television manufacturers set their products up to catch your eye in very brightly-lit retail showrooms. This means that controls like brightness, contrast, sharpness, and color temperature are set much higher than they should be for accurate content reproduction.
A good example is color temperature. Both NTSC and HDTV systems specify a display color temperature of D6500 Kelvin. But the typical out-of-the-box color temperatures range from 8000 Kelvin to over 16,000 Kelvin.
